africa

With the Bankohene, King of Banko, Ghana

During the four years I studied to become a veterinarian I'd travel to Africa each summer. Studying Swahili in Kenya, working on a game ranch, taking a wildlife ecology course and working with the state veterinarian of Zimbabwe on crocodile and ostrich ranches. I even know how to find a crocodile nest.

Africa continued to sing its siren song, and after two years of practicing as an emergency veterinarian in southern California, I returned to East Africa to administer a college semester program for the School for International Training. My intention was to do this for one four month semester but somehow it turned into ten years. Of course there were annual trips back to the U.S. to work as a vet and to visit family and friends.

From a Wildlife Conservation program in Tanzania to Botswana for more nature and conservation, this time with students in tow, then on to Zanzibar to set up a marine biology and coastal ecology program on the island. A year in Ghana, West Africa, doing an arts and culture program, and then I was off to New Zealand studying biodiversity.
