Imagine a New-Age Woodstock out in the middle of the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, with 50,000 people seeking to expand their inner horizons, to frolic under the blazing sun with crazy costumes (or just their birthday suits), to eat pancakes, make art and music, create mutant vehicles, engage in radical self-expression and party hard.

This is Burning Man. The Man is a 50-foot-tall creation of wood and straw which is burned at the end of the week, carrying on a millenia-old human tradition of fire festivals invoking the primal power of the sun. The Burning Man provides only porta-potties (each decorated with haiku and poetry about exactly what goes in the potties and what does NOT), and everything else you have to provide yourself - food, water, costumes, giant flying eyeballs, pancake materials, everything. Then you have to take it ALL back out of the desert when you're done playing - even your used bath water, the desert will reject it! Burning Man is the largest 'Leave No Trace' gathering in the world. The trace left on my own psyche is one of powerful humanity, peace and revelry, spontaneous creativity and a complete rejection of mediocrity.
Burn on!!
